Most of you would know the story in the book of Numbers concerning the twelve spies who were sent by Moses at God’s command to spy out the land of Canaan. They all saw the same thing and yet ten spies perceived a potential disaster upon entry of the Promised Land and two perceived potential victory. All the spies saw the same thing and yet two spies had a completely different attitude to the rest because they were able to see from God’s view point in other words, their faith determined their perception. The rest of them were wimps whose attitude was so fickle as to suggest that returning to Egypt was a better option than entering the Promised Land. All the children of Israel had experienced God’s awesome power in releasing them from the hand of pharaoh. They had seen the mighty miracles of the ten plaques, they had seen the Red Sea parted by the staff of Moses, they had seen the pursuing soldiers swallowed up in the sea. They had all been witness to God’s guidance in the wilderness; a pillar of cloud led them by day and a pillar of fire by night. They had all partaken of His provision – the manna and the quail had provided all the sustenance they needed. And yet only two spies had grown up enough through experiencing God’s grace to believe that God would continue to bless them, the rest of Israel could only perceive things as babies, as if God had never done anything for them. Do you perceive present experiences with the memory of God’s goodness to you?

It seems that Australians have never been so enthusiastic over food as they are right now. According to recent reports, the new television show MasterChef has motivated many Aussies to ‘get serious’ about their cooking. As a result, businesses dealing in kitchenware are booming and families are enjoying more varied tasty meals! It is good to please the taste buds, I enjoy food and I’m  always trying to encourage my husband to taste the foods I like. It’s quite frustrating when people wont even taste to see if something is good, for if you don’t taste it how will you know? In Psalm 34:8 it says, “O taste and see that the LORD is good…”, now I have experienced the LORD and He is very, very good for my soul. In fact His “…words are sweet to my taste! Yes sweeter than honey to my mouth!” (Psalm 119:103) I wish with all my heart that all would taste Him and His goodness. How will you know the Lord’s goodness if you don’t even try to taste Him? It is time right now to become enthusiastic over the Lord. It is good to bless the soul with His sweet presence!

Just recently I viewed some examples of World War Two airborne leaflet propaganda, the leaflets which I studied were dropped to demoralize the allied forces that had landed on D-Day. The Nazi message was geared to discourage the  soldiers by depriving them of enthusiasm, hope and confidence in what they were fighting for. Once the discouragement sets in then the soldiers may disengage which means they may let go of the fight by surrendering or defecting or taking AWOL. The interesting thing concerning these particular pamphlets was that the war ended only 11 months after they were dropped. The truth was, the Nazi forces were themselves beginning to weaken on all sides; they were dropping these leaflets to discourage the enemy yet they in reality were becoming greatly discouraged, many German leaders knew they were going to lose the war and yet the propaganda lies kept coming… Satan is very much aware that Christ dealt him a death blow on the cross of Calvary, he knows his time is limited and yet he still attempts to drop the propaganda on the church of Jesus Christ. Satan’s propaganda aims to make you weary and lose hope so that discouragement will lead you to disengage. Christ never gave us permission to disengage. We are in fact called to ‘fight the good fight, finish the race and keep the faith’.

In 2Kings 2:11-12 it says, ”As Elijah and Elisha were walking along and talking together, suddenly a chariot of fire and horses of fire appeared and separated the two of them, and Elijah went up to heaven in a whirlwind. Elisha saw this and cried out, “My father! My father! The chariots and horsemen of Israel!”

Interestingly God used a fiery chariot and horsemen to collect Elijah, the chariot and horses of fire signified a powerful army. Not all armies in Old Testament times  had chariots, not all armies had horsemen, only the wealthy and powerful ones. In fact the Philistines at some point in the early history of Israel made sure the Israelites didn’t even have swords! Only powerful armies had horses and chariots. When Elisha saw the fiery horses and chariot, he instinctively recognised them as being the spiritual army of Israel, the army of Yahweh and their commission was to pick up Elijah and carry Him to the Lord Almighty. This signified that Elijah was indeed the strongest weapon of God’s power and the best defence of Israel, he played a very important role in the army of the Lord. God used this humble man to fight His battle on earth; this one man was empowered by the Spirit of the Lord to do God’s will in Israel whether Israel listened or not. He was called to deliver a message and a message he delivered in power and in might. And then when his job was done God took him. Like he took Enoch. ‘Enoch walked with God; and he was not for God took him’. Elijah walked with God; and he suddenly was not for God took him in such a way to demonstrate His power and His might as a testimony to the ministry of Elijah. Hallelujah! It is this God whom we serve and His power and might are available to us as we serve His kingdom.
