A couple of Sundays ago, one of our Cityview Dads happened to witness a beautiful moment between 2-year-old Zeb and four-year-old Dakodah. Zeb’s mum is very creative when it comes to dressing her son. On this Sunday, she happened to dress him in a little high vis shirt (exactly the same as his dad would wear to work). 4-year-old Dakodah was most excited to be at church and she maturely greeted everyone she met. As she approached 2-year-old Zeb in the church passage, she quickly took note of what Zeb was wearing and asked: “Have you come straight from work?”
To me, this little incident proves that even 4 year olds make assumptions based on appearances. In 1 Thessalonians 5:22, God warns us to ‘Abstain from all appearance of evil’. We should ever be mindful of how our actions affect other people and what assumptions they’re making concerning our conduct. Christians shouldn’t only abstain from evil, but also abstain from appearances of evil lest any person make a wrong assumption about the Christ who lives in us.
